The Lovebirds Review (2020) | Starts off Good, Dies Down Toward the End

The title should sum it up to be really candid. But, said no movie review ever. So writing The Lovebirds review, I will try to throw in some real reasons why this movie worked as a very light entertainer and why on numerous occasions it didn’t.

The Lovebirds movie amuses you with some good humour that comes naturally to Kumail Nanjiani. His perfect comic timing complements the theme that the movie aimed for.

Issa Rae does not leave any stones unturned too. She has a whole background of gelling up really good with comic affairs. You can see her blend in real good with her role, and react to situations just as you would expect her to. She leaves quite an impression, making sure she does not get forgotten.

The Plot of Lovebirds Movie

The Lovebirds movie tries to throw in a different angle to an already diffused theme, using contemporary things like the present-day career structure, options and hobbies and how it affects the lives of two people as they find themselves in a bizarre situation.

It could have been almost an ingenious thought, had they been really serious about the plot. But the movie is basically a comedy here. So nothing that follows, you can take seriously.

Their one of a kind situation basically writes the plot for itself, and that’s exactly what tries to elicit maximum comedy.

The crux of The Lovebirds movie remains a tad cliched. To put it really bluntly, it basically is nothing but a man and woman on the verge of a breakup, find themselves in an awkward improbable laughable yet a serious situation that has them on the run. It is the same circumstances that end up bringing them closer once again to reignite their spark.

That is basically it. Now that would have been a bummer if it weren’t for some snappy writing to back it up, and don’t forget some acting. I am pretty sure, Kumail and Issa would be the only reason you would want to go ahead with it.

The Lovebirds Review

You can say that it is an entertainer, but light as a feather, where you don’t have to take anything seriously and accept everything thrown down your way. Brazenly flawed, and yet something that you could laugh off and forget.

I say forget because there is nothing in there that stays with you. There is nothing out of the world in there that blows your mind away, except for just one thing that is basically the theme on which the movie drives itself.

Can’t forget to mention this in The Lovebirds movie review, how the movie tries to play on the fiddle of racial profiling to its advantage.

It plays on the insecurities people of color invariably have when they are put in such tough situations. They feel constantly under the cross hair owing to how the police treats them differently. It is also the same reason why the casting has been done such.

The very issue is mentioned twice in the movie subtly laced with humour. It just goes on to show how it has become the accepted way of living and that is so sad per se.

The Lovebirds movie is also one of those after transformation movies that Kumail Nanjiani did, so a lot of thoughts would be around the lines of ‘how the hell did he manage to pull it off’? But they don’t focus on that, probably saving it for his oncoming projects.

The Final Verdict

If you are in need of a light entertainer, I would recommend this movie as a popcorn must. So you laugh it off, maybe eye your other half every now and then with ‘ditto-looks’. Maybe don’t get into the details, and overlook all the direction flaws.

Some jests will get you really good. But none of them would open you up wide. So there’s that! Just watch it for one time fun.
