About Straight From a Movie

Straight From a Movie / Our story

For the films that stay with us.

A dialogue you cannot forget. A character you still think about. A film that leaves you seeing the world a little differently. This is a place for all of them.

Straight From a Movie began in 2013 as a home for memorable movie quotes. From those early Tumblr days, it grew into a space for reviews, film analyses and conversations about cinema. The fascination behind it remains the same: what do we carry with us after the credits roll?

Meet the author

Prashant Singh, writing as Scottshak.

I am a writer, poet and lifelong movie lover. Straight From a Movie brings those interests together: the love of a good story, the pleasure of finding the right words, and the urge to talk about a film long after watching it.

My relationship with writing began early, with a piece published in a school magazine when I was five. Reading, poetry and short stories followed. Although I went on to study computer engineering, the desire to write stayed with me.

My books include Songs of a Ruin, a poetry collection published in 2017, and The Convent. Beyond film reviews, I write poetry, fiction and reflections, and explore storytelling through short films.

Here, I write about the performances, characters, music, images and ideas that make a film worth remembering. Sometimes it is a masterpiece. Sometimes it is an imperfect movie with one extraordinary moment.

Where it all began

A movie becomes a memory.

I still remember discussing Jackie Chan fight scenes with my school friends after watching his movies late at night on television. Those conversations became memories of their own.

“Did you see that part?”

A dialogue. A performance. A shocking twist. A beautiful ending. Sometimes that is all it takes to begin a conversation that stays with you for years.

As the years passed, my love for cinema grew stronger. Genres changed, perspectives evolved, and storytelling began to mean much more to me. Straight From a Movie holds those emotions, memories and conversations alongside the films themselves.

The way I watch

Curiosity, context and an honest response.

Some stories deserve praise. Some deserve criticism. And some simply deserve to be remembered. A review here makes room for what moved me, what did not work, and why.

An older film also carries the assumptions and customs of its time. Looking closely at that context can help us understand its characters and the ideas the filmmakers were trying to challenge. Agreement is never a condition for an interesting conversation.

If movies have helped you revisit memories, survive heartbreak, find inspiration or feel understood for a few hours, you are already part of this journey.
