Paramount has announced the completion of its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The combined company is called Skydance, bringing Paramount and Warner Bros. studios, along with Paramount+ and HBO Max, into one business.
The company says it is committed to at least 30 theatrical films a year, each with a minimum 45-day cinema window. It also says its streaming services will eventually become a single service; the announcement does not provide a consumer launch date.
Why film lovers should care: the cinema-window commitment is a concrete detail to follow. A combined library may make familiar titles easier to find, but the real test will be the films that get made and how audiences can see them. Those outcomes remain to be seen.
